Henry Thomas is undoubtedly one of the UK’s foremost recording and touring musicians!
I first met Henry back in 1981 when he joined my friend Steve Jeffries’ band, The Inversions, and recorded “Mr Mack“. Around this time, Henry started his career as a studio session player, recording tracks like “Master Rocker” and “Here Comes The Sunburst Band” with The Sunburst Band. Later in the 80’s Henry recorded “AC/DC“, “Bags“, “Cravo E Canela” and “Three Blonde Mice” with one of my favourite jazz-funk bands, Paz.
The list of bands and artists he has played with since is like a Who’s Who of popular music in the UK and the US. Here’s a selection: Randy Crawford, Gloria Gaynor, Paul Weller, Omar, Leon Ware, Labi Siffre, Jim Capaldi, Errol Brown, Billy Ocean, Van Morrison, Justin Hayward, Bros, Keni Burke, Heatwave, Hot Chocolate, Ginger Baker, and The Crusaders. Henry has also worked with many jazz artists including Alan Holdsworth, John Etheridge, Jim Mullen, Tim Whitehead, Barbara Thompson, and Didier Lockwood.
Here are some YouTube links: Paul Weller Movement – “Tin Soldier“, Randy Crawford – “One Day I’ll Fly Away“, Billy Ocean – “Stay The Night (Extended)” and “Who’s Gonna Rock You“, and Keni Burke “Risin’ To The Top” – Live in London 2010.
Henry also worked on the Rockschool series on UK TV back in the mid-80’s – click here to see Henry explaining how to play funk bass!
Currently, Henry Thomas performs regularly with Sarah Jane Morris. Here are links to three recorded songs – “Ever Gonna Make It“, “Me and Mrs Jones“, “Sunset” – and a ‘live’ performance of “Never Gonna Give You Up“.
