David ‘DaPaul’ Philips

Standing 6′ 3″ tall in his socks, David Philips is musical force to be reckoned with! A soulful, gospel-influenced singer with Caribbean origins who uses the stage name ‘Da Paul’, David is also a prolific songwriter and an excellent keyboardist!

I first bumped into David in 2010 when I went along to Dion’s bar with Vivienne McKone and she introduced us. We were both on the lookout for new song co-writers and quickly agreed to give this a shot. Our first sessions were quite productive, and we co-wrote three or four songs before David went to work overseas.

In 2012, I co-produced David’s “Soulful Spirit” album (click here to audition at CD Baby) which reached No.3 in the UK Soul Chart and stayed in the top 10 for 4 weeks. Since that time we have regularly recorded together working on each other’s songs and occasionally on co-written songs.

On these recordings David plays Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer Electric Piano, Hammond M3 Organ, Steinway Model K Piano, Hohner Clavinet D6, MiniMoog and lots of ‘tasty’ virtual instrument plug-ins!

Professionally, David has worked as a session musician and backing vocalist with many UK pop and soul artists, including Eternal, Louise, MN8, Cleopatra, Alexander O’Neal, Jhelisa Anderson, Rhonda Thomas, Kloud 9, Des’ree, and Gabrielle, and has appeared on various TV promos including Jools Holland, GMTV, National Lottery Live, VH1, TOTP, Montreaux Jazz Festival, and The World Music Awards.
